Learning With a Twist: How EastSide Students Celebrate the Magic of Fall

At EastSide Charter School, the fall season is more than just the arrival of cooler weather and colorful leaves—it's an opportunity to make learning even more magical! From exciting hands-on activities to creative writing exercises, we embrace the season of change and Halloween fun while keeping our focus on education. Here’s some fun ideas that students can try out both in school and at home to make the most of October with a fun, educational twist.

1. Pumpkin Science Experiments: Where Science Meets Spooky

October wouldn’t be complete without pumpkins, but at EastSide, our kids can take them to the next level with a pumpkin-themed science experiments. Students can explore everything from measuring pumpkin seeds to conducting hands-on chemistry by creating "pumpkin volcanoes" using baking soda and vinegar. It's a fun way for students to get excited about science while enjoying some seasonal flair!

What the students learn: This activity helps students understand chemical reactions, measurement, and the scientific method—all with a Halloween-themed twist.

2. Spooky Story Writing: A Chance for Imagination to Shine

Our classrooms are buzzing with creativity as students put pen to paper for some spooky story writing. Parents can also encourage students to craft their own haunted tales, stretch their imaginations and hone their literacy skills. While the stories may feature ghosts or mysterious settings, the goal is clear: to inspire a love for writing and creative thinking.

What the students learn: Story structure, character development, and descriptive writing come together in a fun, Halloween-themed way.

3. Fun Events: Trunk or Treat

As part of our fall programming, EastSide hosts an annual Trunk or Treat event filled with games, families, and of course candy! It's a day filled with laughter, learning, and plenty of Halloween-themed joy!

What the students learn: The event allows students to experience the fun of this unique holiday while interacting with staff, fellow students, and the community. We also teach kids about expressing their individuality with fun costumes that share a bit about their interests outside of school.

4. Community Service with a Fall Spirit

October at EastSide isn’t just about having fun—it’s also about giving back. This fall, we encourage our students to get involved in their community by finding ways to help others. Whether it’s organizing a canned food drive, donating old clothes or toys, or volunteering at a non-profit - it’s important to give back. Volunteers teaches students empathy and community service, and is a great way to demonstrate that even small acts of kindness can make a big impact.

What the students learn: This activity instills the values of social responsibility, teamwork, and compassion—skills that will last far beyond the classroom.

Fall Fun Meets Lifelong Learning at EastSide

At EastSide, we believe in making education engaging, fun, and meaningful, especially during special times of the year like fall. By blending the excitement of Halloween with valuable lessons in science, writing, creativity, and community, we provide our students with a memorable and enriching experience that sets the stage for success.

As the leaves turn and the air gets crisp, our students are thriving—learning, laughing, and growing. That’s the magic of October at EastSide Charter!
